Ernst II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1818-93), was a fervent rifleman and great supporter of the shooting tradition. He can claim credit for the establishment of the Ger- man Riflemen’s Association and the 1st Ger- man Riflemen’s Festival in Gotha in 1861. The case at hand might have been a gift received upon his ascension to the throne in 1844. An almost identical case manufactured by the same master is on display in the collection of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg (no. 70, 6561, 6563).
