A German horseman‘s shooting hammer with wheellock mechanism, circa 1570/80 Short fluke of square section, the sides decorated with narrow fullers. At the base deep brass-plated fullers. Rectangular socket, the hammer head equally decorated with brass-plated fullers. Copper-soldered, square haft with inserted barrel with smooth bore in 8.5 mm calibre. On the right side a screw-mounted wheellock with drop safety and springloaded pan cover with release button. Dovetailed front sight, the target line going through an opening in the hammer head. On the opposite side a screw-mounted, foldable thrusting spike with slender blade of triangular section, underneath it a curved lanyard loop. Original, turned wooden grip with small octagonal guard disc, pommel with brass fittings. Elaborately cleaned and restored according to museum standards. The foldable spike with mount a modern replacement. Length 66 cm. Rare Renaissance combination weapon. A horseman’s axe with a similar wheellock shooting mechanism crafted in Augsburg can be found in the collection of the Dresden Armoury (inv. No. T 78).
