A significant triple-combed burgonet from the workshop of Desiderius Helmschmied of Augsburg, circa 1530/40 Elegantly shaped shell forged in one piece with three sturdy, serrated combs. Pointed peak crafted in one piece with turned and roped edge struck with Augsburg inspection mark (Pyr) and helmet mark of Desiderius Helmschmied. Old riveted repair on the left side of the peak. The reverse of the shell with four perforations to attach the plume socket. The cheek pieces an old replacement with slightly offset perforated openings for hearing and finely turned and roped edges. Attached leather strap with iron clasp. Short one-piece neck guard. The inside with remnants of the old leather lining. Height 28 cm. Desiderius Helmschmied (1513 - 1578) was employed in the workshop of his stepfather Hans Lutzenberger from 1534 and took over the workshop in 1546. Like his father Kolman Helmschmied (1470 – 1532), he was held in high esteem and worked as personal armourer for Emperor Charles V, for whom he crafted, among other things, the armour the latter wears in the renowned equestrian portrait by Titian on display in the Prado. The rare burgonets of this type with three serrated combs are traditionally ascribed to the life guard of Emperor Charles V (cf. Müller, Heinrich, Europäische Helme, p. 338, to No. 48). Similar specimen marked by him or his father can be seen, among others, in the collections in Vienna, Dresden and New York. 338010 II - € 20.000 | 145
