An Austrian black and white half armour for a man-at-arms,mid-16th century Early burgonet of Hungarian type, circa 1540. The heavy skull forged in one piece, hammered with four linear ornaments in relief, the ridges tapering to a short, distinct point. The pivoted peak with a turned and roped edge. The attached cheek pieces opening on a hinge, each with a raised, chased trefoil motif and four pierced openings for hearing. Original chinstrap eyelets. The riveted neck guard with a turned and roped edge. Shoulder defence with inset linear ornaments, three-lame neck guard with a roped flange. The arsenal mark of the Viennese armoury and a horizontal “D” stamped on the breastplate. Small, riveted repairs to the front edge of the gorget and one corner of the backplate. The breastplate distinctively domed and drawn out to a ridged point with inset, decorative lines. Movable articulated arm gussets, with large, roped flanges at the neck opening and gussets. Two faulds, the attached cuisses sliding on five lames, with prominent, roped flanges. The cross mark of the armoury in Vienna stamped on each of the bottom edges. The unassociated backplate chased with decorative lines in relief, roped flanges and curved culet. The leather lining renewed in places. Height approx. 110 cm. Early suit of armour, assembled from old components. Gorget, breastplate and cuisses were probably originally associated and stamped with the mark of the Viennese armoury. 339337 II € 10.000 | 127
