Description

Once again this spring, buyers will be spoilt for choice with the diverse assemblage of paintings, sculptures and statues in the "Art and antiques" section. Among the 15th to 20th century paintings, a contemporary portrait of Louise Labé, the 16th century French poet (lot 4), and an unusual 17th century Dutch genre painting (lot 6) both deserve special mention. Painted in oil on copper, the picture shows a scene from the world of fables: the animals of the forest executing the wicked fox. One of the objects sure to be of interest to aficionados of German Impressionism is a large-format landscape painting by Eugen Bracht, dated 1909, with a view of the three towers (lot 36).

Moreover, we would like to draw your attention to several noteworthy pieces among the sculptures and statues for sale. In addition to a Madonna from Upper Austria, painted in colour circa 1480 (lot 51), our latest catalogue features a rare Renaissance plaque from the ambit of the Augsburg sculptor Hans Schwarz, circa 1520 (lot 54).

We are presenting our customary wide range of fabulous objects in the works of art section. The catalogue includes a great many superb Kunstkammer objects, such as a miniature casket from the workshop of Michel Mann (lot 208), a masterfully carved, early baroque ivory tankard (lot 122) and a helmet-shaped ewer made of rock crystal (lot 123), which is attributed to the Miseroni workshop of Prague. Next up, an original, 17th century novelty glass flask (lot 176), in the shape of a wheellock pistol, will not disappoint.

Collectors of keys and locks will find rich pickings here, with not just one but several highlights. Along with a large, lavishly decorated gate lock from South Germany, circa 1680 (lot 223), a remarkably rare bolt padlock circa 1620 (lot 222) and an elaborate, convoluted trick padlock, dated 1859 (lot 224) are up for sale.

Scores of objects in silver, porcelain and ivory round off the diverse lineup. Furthermore, you will find an interesting selection of baroque furniture, predominantly from South Germany, and different cabinet caskets dating from the 17th to the 19th century.

With more than 100 works, our current catalogue contains an abundant assortment of Asian art. Particularly worthy of note here are an exceptional dragon, chiselled in jade, from the Hongshan culture (lot 390) and a large, glazed ceramic horse from the Tang dynasty (lot 396). The lavish array of fancy porcelain pieces – primarily from China – is the icing on the cake.

Moreover, the antiquities auction showcases a number of outstanding lots. Second to none is an exceptionally fine, expressively carved marble portrait of the young Roman emperor Caracalla (lot 525), part of the Mellerio collection in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. The wooden statuette of an Egyptian dignitary (lot 486) is also particularly imposing. Finally, the auction also includes a wealth of other objects attesting to the extraordinary artistic craftsmanship of numerous ancient civilisations.
