Tricoloured gold, the entire body delicately decorated with partly shiny, chiselled and engraved flower ornaments on a matte, punched background. On the lid a finely painted portrait of Tsar Nocholas I in a Russian parade uniform with blue sash and Breast Star of the Order of St. Andrew, Gouache and watercolour on ivory, signed “Winberg” on the right, behind glass. Unpunched. Dimensions 25 x 64 x 89 mm, weight 134 g. dimensions of miniature 43 x 30 mm. Good condition. In the original leather-covered case lined with silk.
Ivan Andreevich Vinberg, portrait painter, master of watercolour miniatures, academic of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. He mainly painted miniature portraits in watercolour technique. From 1824 onwards, he repeatedly displayed his miniatures in exhibitions held in the halls of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. Professor at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts (1846). His works are exhibited in many museum collections, among them the National Russian Museum, the Hermitage an the Tretyakov Gallery. Enclosed are the documents regarding the metal analysis.
Allegedly a personal gift of the Tsar to his personal physician. Very delicately painted miniature and unusually splendid object of museum quality and historical significance.
