An Ottoman chamfron, 17th century

Description

Tombac, gilt (somewhat rubbed). One-piece chamfron with multiple ridges and cutouts for eyes and ears chased with hemispheric ornaments. On the forehead an openwork medallion with "Tamga" (arsenal mark), surrounded by finely engraved tendril ornaments. The edges turned and with surrounding lining holes, minimally damaged near the lining holes, small later perforation at the top. Height 63 cm. Impressive chamfron whose austere form has an almost sculptural appeal.
