Description
Oil on canvas. Head-and-shoulder portrait of a young peasant woman against a dark background. Clad in a black dress with loose white collar, she faces the viewer with a thoughtful look. Fine craquelures. The stretcher signed "W. Leibl" on the reverse, the canvas with a (barely legible) stamp of a Munich arts supplier. In a gilt wooden profile frame with punched décor. Dimensions of painting 46.5 x 37 cm, dimensions of frame 62.5 x 43 cm. Wilhelm Leibl (1844 – 1900) was a significant representative of German Realism. He was in constant exchange with Gustave Courbet and made the acquaintance of Manet on a journey to Paris. Numerous painters gathered around him (Leibl Circle) who were followers of his idea of "pure painting". Leibl’s comment on portrait painting: "I paint human beings as they are, so the soul is there in any case".Condition: II Questions about the lot?
