Description

Preserved at 12.5 cm in length, a square iron rod opening into a spout of a cone-shaped bronze attachment just under 3 cm long. This is crowned by a stylised bird of prey's head, probably representing an eagle. The hollow cone is pierced with two horizontal rows of four openings each, resembling "barbed arrowheads". On the inside, there was an object, no longer preserved, which made noise when moved. The edge of the cone has a casting defect in one place. Beautiful dark green patina of the bronze cone top. Probably ornament of a carriage. Total length 29 cm. Impressive example of the early Scythian animal style of archaic charisma.

Provenance: Ostdeutsche Privatsammlung.
