Red, yellow and white gold, the jeweller's hallmark "CWMS" and the Hanau city hallmark stamped in the lid and base. Finely wrought, raised décor of blossoms and foliage in the three shades of gold on a partly guilloche background. Inset in the lid, an extended oval portrait of the princess, painted on porcelain in the style of Josef Karl Stieler, 1838. Dimensions 86 x 65 x 22 mm, weight 128.27 g.Contains a folded note (the fold completely torn) with a dedication from Archduchess Marie Valerie (tr.) "To my dear Louise from her faithful Valerie" in violet ink. It was apparently a gift from Princess Alexandra Amalie of Bavaria to the later Empress of Austria on the occasion of her 13th birthday on Christmas Eve 1850, which was presented to Princess Louise of Bavaria by Archduchess Marie Valerie on 10 October 1913 to mark the birth of Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria.
Provenance: Hermann Historica, 36th Auction 1998, lot no. 3227. Thereafter in a private German collection.
