An Italian circular shield made of iron, circa 1580

Description

The blackened shield distinctly domed, the surface with visible hammer marks. A quadrangular spike screwed into the centre, surrounded by two layers of forged foliage décor. Four large, grooved rivets for the shield grips. The outer rim sloping slightly outwards, with a row of lining rivets and a prominent turned and roped flange. Original decorative fringe in fine brass wire weave. Scant remnants of the original leather lining on the back. Diameter 51 cm.
