Description
Oil on copper. Half-length portraits of the Roman emperors Augustus, Claudius, Vespasian, and Vitelius, all depicted as commanders with baton. In one upper corner the depiction of a Roman sestertius. Dimension of each portrait 19.5 x 16 cm.After the famous series of Titian who created eleven frescoes with portraits of Roman emperors for the Duke of Mantua in the years 1536-40. The paintings later came into the possession of the Spanish king and were destroyed in a palace fire in 1734. By that time the portraits had already become known through several copies and etchings published in the 16th and 17th century.
