DescriptionOil on oak wood. A depiction of the seated young prince, wearing a cap, a cloak draped over his shoulder. Holding a bow in his left hand, a quiver of arrows at his feet. To his left, a pedestal with ornamental figures, above which the branches of a tree. A view of a landscape on the right. Signed "Maes" in the background on the left. In an old, gilt, moulded frame. Dimensions 58 x 46 cm, including frame 82 x 71 cm.
Nicolas Maes (1634-93) was a Dutch painter who initially worked in Rembrandt's atelier in Amsterdam, later in Dordrecht and Antwerp.
William III of Orange-Nassau (1650 - 1702) was stadtholder of the Netherlands from 1672 until his death.
