Oil on a light primed canvas, signed "FA von Kaulbach 1900" at the bottom left edge of the oval picture. Half-length portrait in Spanish court attire with a gilt rapier, wearing the collar of the Order of St. Hubert (the Wittelsbach House Order) and a white ruff, with flames and a landscape scene in the background. The head exquisitely painted in pastose technique. The oval, painted architectural frame in neo-Renaissance style. An old paper label reading "Stadtgemeinde München K 4880" on the back of the stretcher. The decorative frame with gilt stucco (minor defects) and leaf ornaments engraved at the corners. The painted surface darkened, shrinkage cracks. Untouched, as found condition. Can easily be improved by professional restoration. Size of the painting circa 110 x 90 cm, size of the frame circa 125 x 105 cm.
Together with Franz von Lenbach and Franz von Stuck, Friedrich August von Kaulbach was one of the Münchner Malerfürsten (Munich painter princes), almost exclusively portraying members of the highest German and American social circles.
