DescriptionThe domed iron shield with deeply hammered decoration. The continuous, flat outer rim with a turned and roped flange. A depiction of a centaur with a bow (the constellation Sagittarius), surrounded by stars. Lavish gilt and gold-inlaid details, the torso of the archer still bearing remnants of silver plating. The continuous border delicately engraved and punched with figurative cartouches between ornamental décor. Depictions of Venus and Mars on the sides, pseudo-antique scenes at the top and bottom. Four pairs of stitch-holes to fasten the shield grips. Dimensions 58.5 x 48 cm.
