Description

Cal. 9 mm Blackpowder, SN. 899, small parts with factory no. 4. Bright 10-groove rifled bore, length 138 mm. Six shots. Single action. On left side of frame marked "PATENT 1849", on the right two-line signature "K:K:PRIV:MASCH:FABR: / INNSBRUCK." All parts bright, few very fine pits in places. Dark, smooth walnut grip panels. Rare.
When the Imperial Austrian Navy decided to introduce a new handgun, they considered to move to modern revolvers. The "Imperial Machine Factory Innsbruck" took out a patent for the Colt Navy, slightly modified the original design and finally presented the gun to the Navy trials in September of 1849. The revolver performed very well and was adopted as official sidearm. However, as production to the highest standards proved too expensive, only about 1000 were built and the Navy started purchasing directly from Colt.
