An officer's cavalry sabre with Scottish basket hilt, circa 1810/20

Description

Slightly curved single-edged blade (somewhat pitted in places) with double-edged point and double fullers on both sides. In the upper third etched trophy decoration on both sides with depiction of a horse-mounted hussar. The base of the back with illegible maker’s monogram. Brass knuckle-bow hilt in the style of the Scottish broadsword, the knuckle bow with engraved thistle motif. Grip covered with sharkskin and gilt brass wire wrap. Lanyard loop with movable brass ring. Black leather scabbard, the smooth brass furniture with two movable suspension rings. On the reverse of the chape engraved owner’s name "Davies". Length 97 cm.
