DescriptionHexapod base with an openwork strut with wave pattern, the legs with square, profiled finials. Circular seat with central depression and down-turned rim. Intact. Beautiful Patina. Height 28.6 cm. Weight 4 kg. A masterpiece of Roman craftmanship.
Bronze stools of a similar size have been discovered in Pompeii in the Houses of Ephebus and Fabius Rufus, see the catalogue Rediscovering Pompeii, Rome, 1992, nos. 56-57, and a further example in the British Museum (inv. no. 1856,1226.667).
Provenance: East German private collection. Previously in a private collection in the US, acquired in 1991 from Merrin Gallery, New York.
