A Viking silver pendant with warrior head, 10th – 11th century

Works of Art, Antiquities | A83kua | Live auction | 422 Lots

Description

A silver pendant representing the face of a helmeted fighter. The nasal part of a helmet is clearly visible. The round eyes and the open mouth in the mask-like face express archaic strength. Eye bows, cheeks and chin are decorated with fine filigree and granulation. Anatomical details like a beard are strictly stylized. In the rough world of the Vikings such amulets should give protection and strength to the wearer. On top with cross eyelet. Intact. Length 3.9 cm.

Provenance: From the Lithuanian art trade.
