A Scandinavian Viking gold necklace, 10th – 11th century

Description

One large and four smaller lunula-shaped pendants. With six round, button-like pendants. On the obverse, strictly geometric ornaments are applied in filigree and granulation technique. The most important motifs on the lunula-shaped pendants are triangles and pearl-like circle decorations. The round pendants have a cross in the centre and an outer band with triangles and diamonds. All pendants with elongated, horizontally attached eyelet. The cross indicates the increasing influence of the Christian faith among the Vikings. Ensemble in highest quality finish. A top product of Viking goldsmithing. Intact. Diameter of the round pendants 1.8 cm. Length of the lunula-shaped pendants 4.7 cm and 3.1 cm. Weight 44,9 g.
