DescriptionMarble protome in the shape of a ram's head with curled, ribbed horns, a prominent forehead and fully sculptured features. The strong neck extending backwards to a shoulder, where it terminates in a thick, square spike with a horizontal perforation. It remains unclear what object the marble protome was originally attached to. Beautiful, ochre-coloured patina. The snout with a slight antique knock on the left, the spike broken at the perforation and glued together. Length 14 cm.
Provenance: Acquired in the Austrian art trade, formerly in the collection of Elias S. David (1891 - 1969), New York.
