A spiked Luristan macehead, 2600 – 2400 B.C.

Description

A tubular bronze macehead. The upper half is decorated with three rows of strong thorns. Between each row of thorns a snake. Small chip at the upper finish, otherwise intact and with beautiful green patina. Length 15 cm. Cf. G. Zahlhaas, Luristan. Antike Bronzen aus dem Iran (Munich 2002), p.18, no. 4 (Catalogue of the Archaeological State Collection Munich).

Provenance: Portuguese private collection, acquired 2002 on the British art market. Previously Axel Guttmann Collection.
