A silver-inlaid German/Spanish rapier, 16th/19th century

Description

Double-edged stabbing blade with flat ridge and short fuller on both sides. The obverse struck with the signature "ANTONIO BAENA ME FECIT", the reverse with "VLEIS VIRGO MARIA IHS". The robust ricasso struck on both sides with the Toledo inspection mark and the mark of Antonio de Baena (cf. Seitz, "Blankwaffen II", figure 259, no. 10). Iron bar hilt dating from the 19th century cut with a silver-damascened flower relief. Iron wire wrap with Turk's heads. Well preserved weapon, the blade partially slightly pitted. Length 117 cm.
