The finely curved, slender head embellished with elaborate, geometric linear patterns. The narrow shaft of oval cross-section, entirely covered in fine incised ornamentation. Beautiful aged patina. Mounted on a base. Length 86 cm.
Gugu clubs come from the interior of Viti Levu, the main island of the Fiji archipelago. It is assumed that these clubs were primarily used in dance ceremonies. Their form comes from a stylised depiction of the flat butterfly fish.
