Marie-Fran‡ois-Henri de Franquetot, Comte de Coigny (1737 - 1821)

his personal small-sword, circa 1780
Double-edged colichemarde blade of flattened hexagonal section with well-preserved gilt etching against a blued background on both sides. Gilt iron knuckle-bow hilt chiselled in low relief with trophies-of-war on the exterior of the double shell-guard and artillery scenes on the inside. The pommel bears depictions of an equestrian on both sides. The gilded iron grip is beautifully chiselled with martial trophies, lion heads and flowery vines. The obverse side bears the crowned coat of arms of the Counts of Coigny, the opposite side the cipher "MFC" (small hole in each). Attached collection number "N179" (collection of Napoleon I). Length 102.5 cm.
Marie-Francois-Henri de Franquetot, Comte de Coigny, was a General of Dragoons from 1771 until 1783, and became Marshal of France after 1816.
