The following objects originally belonged to the legendary fighter pilot and bearer of the Pour le mérite, First Lieutenant Max Immelmann, "The Eagle of Lille", and were kept by his brother Franz. At age 15 Max enrolled in the Royal Saxonian Cadet Corps in Dresden. In 1911 he was an ensign in the Railway Regiment No. 2, atended the military academy in Anklam, took the officer exam, and was discharged at his own request to the reserves, taking up studies at Dresden Technological College. When the First World War broke out in 1914, Immelmann was first drafted to his old regiment, but in November went to the Air Replacement Station in Berlin-Adlershof. He was then transferred to the later renowned Field Fighter Unit 62, where he met Oswald Boelcke, the other successful pilot of early WW I. They were the first aviators to receive th Pour le mérite on 12th Jan. 1916. On 18th June 1916, the day of his death, Immelmann brought down two British aircraft, air victories no. 16th and 17th, before his plane crashed either due to propeller damage or enemy action - these two explanation exist as to why he came down. His death was followed by mourning ceremonies in Douai and Dresden, which commemorated him as a war hero.
The photographs and letters were attached to album pages by Franz Immelmann and are in chronological and thematic order.
